I believe that the IDecco is a very useful unit. I especially like the tube pre-amp and the onboard DAC. You no longer need to purchase a Wadia 179 Ipod transport. This is a 9.00 savings. The Sabre Dac sounds really great. You can feed in a disc player through the optical input, or other device using RCA cables, or even a digital coaxial (digital device)source. Lastly, you can hook the IDecco directly to your computer. Your computer can be used to play a disc, stream audio from the net, or play your digitally stored music. This is truly great.
However, I believe that it is often best to use powered speakers because the IDecco is not particularly powerful with 30 wpc pushing 8 ohms. Secondly, the headphone amp is just too underpowered to be really satisfactory. I find that the V-Can does a better job along with a number of separate headphone amplifiers. I have often plugged a much more powerful headphone amp which might actually exceed the cost of the IDecco into the IDecco to play music through hungry headphones like AKG or Sennheiser. The reason that it is still good to have the IDecco is that you benefit from the Ipod dock which is truly digital and because once you have the benefit of getting your music from a purely digital source by bypassing the cheap DAC and amp on the Ipod or from your computer, and you get the benefit of the ESS Sabre Dac. You would probably have to spend more than 0.00 just to get the Wadia and any reasonably priced, but effective DAC. That puts you more than 2/3's into the price of the IDecco. Now you have a truly versatile stereo amp for the 21st century.
You just need to be willing to pay for the money to buy the powered monitors and powered subwoofer to get the big sound. This could cost anywhere from 9.00 for Audio Engine, 0.00 for NHT M-00 Monitors, or ,350.00 for Dynadio Monitors and 9.00 to 9.00 for a subwoofer (approximate costs for new gear with no discounts.) Additionally, the volume control on the IDecco allows you to control volume on the powered speakers connected to the pre-amp out. That is really a great feature. Once you play your music into a powered speaker, you must usually use the computer's sound card to control volume. With the computer sound card, you usually get substandard sound. Once you connect using USB, you have bypassed the sound card entirely. You need another volume control device. The IDecco works well with that concept.
I just wish that the headphone amp really had the juice it needs. When I was listening to Sennheiser 650's, it just could not drive them properly. I also wish that it had more power.
Lastly, you really get a lot for the money. Your computer will now be your music server which for me is really very convenient. Another word of caution is that you need to back up your music files to another source. Hard-drives fail. This either means countless hours to reload your discs or a lot of money to download items again. A terra byte drive is under 0.00 and will hold more music than most people will listen to in a lifetime. With CD's or LP's the music (properly cared for) should last a lifetime. No one is likely to be so lucky with hard drives which are mechanical and will fail at some point.
